Lady Vikings tumble in season opener, 13-7

Harrisburg pounded 12 hits and took advantage of seven errors Wednesday to defeat the Siuslaw Vikings, 13-7, in a nonleague softball game at the Siuslaw Softball Field.

The Lady Vikings, 0-1, host Sutherlin at 3 p.m. Thursday in a doubleheader.

The Lady Eagles improved to 2-0, including a season-opening, 18-6 win Monday at Monroe.

"We played well for the first game of the season," Siuslaw coach Sean O'Mara said. "We have to work at not beating ourselves and staying present with the play that's in front of us.

"Seniors showed good leadership throughout the game, especially considering four underclassmen are starting, including a freshman at shortstop.

"I expect to see the most growth this week with three games over two days. We play Sutherlin on Thursday at home for a doubleheader.

"I look forward to seeing how much the girls improve in that span of time."

Freshman Bailey Overton led the Lady Vikings with a double, 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored and a stolen base.

Senior catcher Lexi Smith was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base.

Siuslaw junior pitcher Nina Aaron had 6 strikeouts and gave up only 5 earned runs.
