Vikings tumble at Cottage Grove, 7-4, 14-3

Gabe Simington struck out 12 in a six-inning complete game in the opener.

The Cottage Grove Lions extended the Siuslaw Vikings baseball team's losing streak to 18 games Friday with a Sky-Em League doubleheader sweep at Kelly Field in Cottage Grove, 7-4 and 14-3.

Siuslaw, 0-12 in league and 1-18 overall, closes out the season next week with three games, a single game Tuesday against Elmira and a twin bill Friday against Marshfield.

Cottage Grove improved to 8-4 in league and 11-10 overall as the No. 20-ranked Lions continued their chase for a playoff berth.

In the opener, the Lions plated three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 4-all tie, retiring the Vikings in order in the top of the seventh to preserve the win.

Vikings senior left-hander Gabe Simington struck out 12 in a six-inning complete game, giving up only two earned runs.

"Gabe pitched very well," Siuslaw coach Tom Shinn said.

Cleanup-up hitting sophomore Chayton James was 2-for-4 with an RBI, junior Zach Stinger 2-for-3 with a run scored, junior Caleb Hennessee 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs, sophomore Elijah Blankenship had a run scored and an RBI and junior Jared Northrop had a run scored and the Vikings' lone stolen base.

Blankenship, Hennessee and James each picked up an RBI in the top of the fifth to rally Siuslaw from a 4-1 deficit to a 4-4 tie.

In the nightcap, Hennessee was 2-for-3 with a run scored, sophomore Dalton Stinger had a double and a run scored and junior Clayton Remilong was 1-for-1 with an RBI.

"Zach Stinger (3-for-5) had a great day at the plate, and Caleb Hennessee (3-for-6) had a very productive day at the plate," Shinn said.
