Vikings' Chad Smith resigns as head coach

Chad Smith

Chad Smith has resigned as head football coach at Siuslaw High School, which is wasting no time finding a replacement.

The position has been posted and the application deadline is Friday. That's this Friday.

The job posting was so rushed that it tells applicants "the coach should possess a strong fundamental knowledge of football as well as current relevant knowledge of the Far West League."

The Vikings don't play in the Far West League. They don't even play in the Sky-Em League, home for the majority of Siuslaw sports.

Siuslaw was 0-8 last year, including 0-5 in 3A Special District 2 North, a classification one level down from the 4A Sky-Em League.

Students planning to play this coming fall are scheduled to meet today (Tuesday, June 4) at the high school lecture hall, according to an announcement on the program's Facebook page.

"This will be an opportunity for players to hear about new workout schedules, opportunities to improve the themselves and the program, as well as, hear the steps for moving the program forward. It is important for every player to attend," the announcement reads.

"A varsity head coach is no easy task with challenges coming from all directions. We thank Coach Smith for all his hard work, his dedication and efforts to improving the lives of his players and for his passion for the game of football."

Siuslaw was Smith's third head coaching position in five seasons. He was head coach for one season (2014) at La Grande, where he led the team to a state playoff berth, and for one season at Seaside (2016).

This fall's head coach will be the third in as many seasons for the Vikings, who enjoyed unusual stability for a half century under two head coaches, Len Lutero and Tim Dodson.

Dodson retired following the 2015 season, when the Vikings were 6-3 and earned a state playoff berth.

Jamin Pool was 2-6 in 2016 and 1-7 in 2017, which included a forfeit to North Bend due to a lack of healthy players.
