Annual Cape Mountain trail run adds a 10K

You can get lost in your thoughts, and in the woods, at the annual Cape Mountain Trail Run, a fundraiser for the Siuslaw High School cross country team.

"This is a low-key event," run organizer Leonard "Snake" Ulrich said. "No frills. No website.

"(Only) a clipboard at the start to know who we have to search for if they don't come back."

The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday, June 29, starting and finishing at the Horse Creek Campground, NF-58, north of Florence.

Run distances include the Jim Archer 10 Mile and Blue Horizon 4 Mile trail runs as well as a new 10-kilometer race.

Suggested entry fee is a donation of $15, which includes a Nike T-shirt.

Money raised helps send athletes to the Steens Mountain High Altitude Running Camp in July.

ALOHA, VIKINGS SENIORS

The Vikings track and field team held its annual awards night Monday, a final event for seniors who graduated this past Friday night.

Siuslaw had five senior girls on its roster and one boy, Ethan Hack.

The girls were Hailee Edgerly, Davina Galli, Madison Reynolds, Alyssa Richards and Naomi Shoji.

Of some 50 athletes on the boys and girls track and field teams, only six were seniors, including cross country runners Galli and Shoji.

"Those two — Galli and Shoji — are my heroes," Siuslaw coach Chris Johnson said in an email. "Naomi was the heart and soul of our 4x400, and Davina was the only athlete on our team — male or female — to be all-league in four events.

"They came a LONG way over four years."

14 VIKINGS SIGN UP FOR STEENS
