Showdown looms as two share league lead

ACC has surged into a share of first place with one night of play remaining in Miller League Softball.

Wednesday, ACC thumped Lofy Construction, 37-3, and Beachcomber, 22-8, at Miller Park to catch Welton Construction atop the standings at 12-4.

Meanwhile, Welton dropped a 20-4 decision to Beachcomber before holding off winless Lofy, 25-21.

The two teams will settle it on the field this coming Wednesday when they meet at 5:30 p.m. on the South Field. Beachcomber plays Lofy at the same time on the North Field.

The ACC vs. Welton winner clinches at least a tie for the title, depending on the final games at 7 — ACC vs. Beachcomber on the South Field and Welton vs. Lofy on the North Field.

But there are tiebreakers, and Welton holds the critical head-to-head edge, three games to two. ACC has the next two tiebreakers, runs scored and run differential.

Welton beat ACC 16-14 in Week 1, 16-12 in Week 3 and 10-9 in Week 4. ACC won 16-4 in Week 6 and 21-16 in Week 7.

ACC has scored 361 runs, Welton 292. ACC has a run differential of 227, Welton 71.

Beachcomber enters the final night at 8-8, while Lofy is 0-16.

An end-of-season tournament is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 24, at Miller Park.
