Vikings hammer Harrisburg to open league

Siuslaw sophomore Braydon Thornton has 10 touchdown receptions in five games this season.

Siuslaw Vikings football fans couldn't have asked for a bigger, better turnaround.

Friday, the Vikings opened 3A Special District 2 North play with a 56-point victory, 64-8, over the Harrisburg Eagles at Hans Petersen Memorial Field.

Last season, the Eagles beat the Vikings by 56 points in Harrisburg, 63-7.

That's a 112-point reversal of fortunes. And, at 4-1 overall, the Vikings are erasing memories of last season's 0-8 record.

Sophomore wide receiver Braydon Thornton pulled four touchdown passes from junior quarterback Elijah Blankenship and sophomore running back Camp Lacouture ran for three TDs and converted four of five extra-point kicks in Friday's romp.

The Vikings travel to Adair Village next Friday to play unbeaten Santiam Christian (5-0). Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Santiam Christian, which won last year's meeting in Florence, 32-6, beat visiting Pleasant Hill on Friday, 63-20.

Sutherlin won at La Pine, 29-28.

RECORD UPDATES

Note from Siuslaw sports historian Don Hunt:

"I wanted to fill you in on some Siuslaw stats and records that I don't believe are in Tim Dodson's record book or in the back of my book.

"Braydon Thornton caught a lot of passes for a ton of yards and had four TD catches in the romp over Harrisburg.

"The school record for the most catches in one game is 10, shared by Jared Kreil (10 catches, 152 yards, two touchdowns) in a 38-14 win over Elmira in 2004, and Scott Gordon (10 catches, 104 yards, no TDs) in a 33-27 loss to North Bend in 2015.

"Thornton's four touchdown receptions tied a single-game mark held by Collin Cram-Watkins, who accomplished the feat during a 48-38 loss to Marist in 2003.

"You also won't find the list for most receptions in one season.

"The record is 66, set by Gordon in 2015. Rounding out the top six are Jared Kreil (62 in 2004), Sam Johnson (48 in 2013), Cram-Watkins (47 in 2003), Kreil (46 in 2003), and Ryan Smith (45 in 2011).

"Single-season and career reception yards (top 10) are in the back of my book.

"The school record for most touchdown passes in one game is five, set by Gabe Haberly in 2003.

"The school record for most yards in one game is 639, established during a 56-32 win over La Pine in 2003.

"I'm thinking some of these records could be broken in the near future, and might be of interest to you."

"Your handy-dandy Siuslaw sports historian."

Hunt will be releasing a second edition of his book on the history of Vikings football early next year. "Chapters and photos will be added on Sam Johnson, longtime Siuslaw statisticians Lanny Nivens and Bob Hylton and chapters on the 2018 and 2019 seasons. New school records and other relevant statistics will also be updated," Hunt said.

NOTES

Siuslaw was ranked No. 29 of 29 schools in 3A football last season by the OSAA. ... The Vikings are No. 18, with a bullet, this season. ...
