Newport tops Lady Vikings in opener, 51-37

Siuslaw junior Gracie Freudenthal

Senior Hannah Trommlitz scored a game-high 14 points Wednesday to lead the No. 9-ranked Newport Cubs to a 51-37 victory over the Siuslaw Vikings in a nonleague girls basketball game at Glenn Butler Court.

The game was the season opener for both teams.

The Lady Vikings next play Friday at Pleasant Hill, then return home Tuesday to host Sutherlin.

Siuslaw junior Gracie Freudenthal had a team-high 12 points despite sitting out much of the first half with three fouls.

Senior Mia Collins had 10 points for the Lady Vikings and sophomore Stella Barter 10 points for the Cubs.

The two teams played to a standoff through the first quarter, which ended in a 9-9 tie.

The Cubs built a seven-point lead, 20-13, midway through the second quarter, thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers by juniors Kathleen Martinson and Michaela Wagner.

Newport led by eight at halftime, 25-17.

The Cubs pushed to their biggest lead of 14 points midway through the third quarter at 36-22, but the Lady Vikings went on a 9-2 run to trail by just seven entering the fourth quarter, 38-31.

Martinson hit a 3-pointer and senior Dakota Rundell a basket as the Cubs took command by 12, 43-31.

Siuslaw never got closer than eight the rest of the way.
