Vikings ground Gold Beach, fall to Sutherlin

Siuslaw wrestlers Hunter Petterson and Elijah LaCosse each recorded two pins Wednesday as the Vikings split a pair of dual matches at Glenn Butler Court.

Siuslaw rolled Gold Beach, 63-12, while dropping a nailbiter to Sutherlin, 39-31.

Hunter Petterson, wrestling at 126 pounds, pinned Isaac Richards of Gold Beach in 48 seconds and Devon Felix of Sutherlin in 3:53.

LaCosse, at 145, pinned Landen Timeus of Gold Beach in 5:50 and Anthony Clark of Sutherlin in 1:52.

Vikings with pins against Gold Beach included Jonathan Rose at 182 and JC Gentry at 220. Siuslaw's Yoskar Delamora had a pin at 106 in the Sutherlin dual.

Siuslaw had more individual wins on the mat than Sutherlin, 7-6, but Sutherlin had a 5-3 edge in pins and won one match by forfeit.

Siuslaw won 5 of 6 matches on the mat against Gold Beach. Seven of the 13 weights were forfeits for lack of an opponent.

The Vikings wrestle Saturday at the Sutherlin Invitational and next Thursday at Siletz.

Siuslaw's featured home meet, the Nick Lutz Invitational, is a week from Saturday.

Siuslaw coach Neil Wartnik's analysis:

"Those are the bottom lines. What they do not betray is the fact that we won more head to head matches in dual 2 than Sutherlin. We won 7, and they won 6. Sutherlin had more pins than we had, and this is why
they won the dual. In a wrestling dual meet a pin is worth 6 match points, a technical fall (winning by 15 points or more) worth 5, a major decision (victory margin of 8-14) worth 4, and a basic decision (victory margin of 7 or fewer) worth 3.  We won several very close matches and consequently chalked up fewer points.  In the most exciting match of the night Christian Newlan tied his match at 195 as time expired and then won in overtime to secure his victory. Christian's win had the gym on its feet. Another nail-biter was at 120 where Mason Buss held on to a one point lead throughout the 3rd period to record a win. This was a match of two highly-touted freshman.  His opponent Matthew Carrillo has a decorated youth wrestling record — even as Mason.

"Our team continues to wrestle very well! Sutherlin is a solid team and has been for years. The most impressive win of the night was recorded by Elijah LaCosse who dominated and pinned highly touted Landen Timeus from Gold Beach. Early in the match it appeared that Elijah might get pinned. The near fall was waived off due to an illegal hold by Timeus. From that point on Elijah was dominant. He pinned Timeus with 10
seconds left in the match.

"Saturday we are off to Sutherlin. We may get a number of rematches from last night's dual. It will be interesting."
