Siuslaw Class of 2020 misses out . . . again

A funny thing happened on the way to today's opening of a three-decades-old Siuslaw Elementary School time capsule.

The event was sent to detention, for a year.

"Some misunderstandings have a long fuse — like 29 years," SES principal Michael Harklerode wrote in an email to school district personnel and the media.

"In the file left for us …, the time capsule was addressed to the class of 2020. I was contacted today by former SES teacher Teresa Ferrer (nee Anderson) whose class buried the time capsule in 1991.

"The time capsule is intended for the class starting their senior year in 2020. That would make them the class of 2021."

Harklerode had arranged a small capsule-opening ceremony for today (Wednesday, June 3) at the SES Courtyard.

But it was not to be, the Siuslaw Class of 2020 apparently missing out on one more thing.

"While I'm disappointed to put off the opening another year," Harklerode wrote, "this will give us a chance to give it a more appropriate presentation when people can actually gather.

"We have a list of students involved and will try to track them down. Thanks to Lori King for putting Ms. Ferrer in touch with me."
