Vikings looking to 'right the ship' at Marist

The Siuslaw Vikings are about to get a healthy dose of Sky-Em League boys basketball.

The question is, will they be healthy enough to survive it.

"It has been a season of adversity for us," Siuslaw coach Dylan Perry said Monday. "Lots of sickness and injuries have plagued us."

The Vikings begin their 10-game league gauntlet with a game Friday at Marist. Tipoff is 5:45 p.m.

Siuslaw finished its preleague schedule at 6-6, including back-to-back losses in the Sky-Em League/Skyline Crossover last weekend.

Marist is 8-4 and ranked No. 20 in Class 4A by the Oregon School Activities Association.

Siuslaw is ranked No. 24, just on the cusp of 4A playoff discussion. The top 24 teams in the 34-school 4A make it to the playoffs, the top eight receiving byes and the next 16 paired in play-in games to the 16-team championship bracket.

The Vikings will have to find a way to stay competitive in a league the includes current No. 1 Junction City (12-2), No. 5 Marshfield (9-2) and No. 14 Cottage Grove (9-3).

Only No. 32 Elmira (2-7) is ranked below Siuslaw in the six-school Sky-Em.

"We are hopeful to right the ship and make a statement in league, which leads to a playoff run," Perry said.

"If we are healthy, this team has what it takes."

Coast Radio (FM106.9) and the NFHS Network are scheduled to carry Friday's game.
