Siuslaw junior varsity falls to Philomath

Freshman Lupita Figueroa was 16-for-16 in serves with two aces and sophomore Marika White had seven kills Tuesday night as the Siuslaw junior varsity girls volleyball team dropped its season-opener to the visiting Philomath Warriors.

Philomath won 14-25, 25-19, 15-11.

"We did a good job of running our offense," said Lynnette Holdahl, the junior varsity coach. "We came up with 20 kills. That's really good for a JV level."

Experience and height will be challenges for the JV.

"We're pretty short and pretty young this year," said Holdahl. "We've got a couple of girls nearly 5-foot-10, but they don't jump, and have to reach."

The young Vikings also struggled at service.

"Our serve-receive was probably our weakest spot," said Holdahl, "and that's what we talked about after the game. We just made too many mistakes getting the ball up to our setter."

Siuslaw plays a nonleague match at Elmira at 5 p.m. today (Wednesday, Sept. 2).
