Vikings back to school, and back to work

Siuslaw coach Tim Dodson, the Vikings football players and their supporters reflect after a season-opening win at Newport.

The game was over, and it was a nice opening win. The afterglow had ended, and so had the shoutouts.

Siuslaw football coach asked his players to think about the meaning of Labor Day, to honor it, and to come to practice at 6:30 Tuesday morning, the first day of school, ready to get at it again.

The Vikings, 29-6 winners over Newport this past Friday, host Pleasant Hill at 7 p.m. Friday at Hans Petersen Field.

"There's a lot of people around here who work, work, work, work, work," Dodson said, as he discharged his players to the showers at Bill Morrow Field in Newport. "(Labor Day) is an opportunity to take some time off and remember that.

"And realize that our country runs on a whole bunch of little people, all working together."

Dodson also could have been describing his team's effort Friday against the Cubs of Newport.

"There were a few series where we were awesome, and there were a few series where we didn't quite do what we needed to do," he said after the game. "It was a nice first football game, and we did some things well.

"We're going to have to take a look at some game film, analyze it, and see what we have to do to get better."

Dodson didn't need film to pick out a handful of standouts.

"Preston (Mitchell's) a pretty good player, I mean really a pretty good player," Dodson said, of his starting quarterback, who ran for two touchdowns and threw for a third in the game. Mitchell also had two interceptions on defense.

"I'm curious to watch our O(ffensive)-front on film, and (senior defensive lineman) Michael Mason's play on the inside. He had to anchor some things, and did a pretty good job."

Dodson also noted the play of running back Kenneth Thrall and wide receiver Scott Gordon, both seniors.

Thrall carried the ball 13 times for 83 yards, including five yards for a touchdown at the start of the second quarter.

"Scotty's being able to control the outside for us was a big deal," Dodson said of Gordon, who had eight catches for 65 yards, his 10-yard scoring pass from Mitchell and Thrall's point-after kick the only points of the second half.

Now it's back to work, the game won, Labor Day observed.

"We take a day to honor the workers," Dodson told his players, after Friday's afterglow, the team huddled in a circle with family, friends and well-wishers behind the ring.

"It's very important that we do that. We do not practice that day. We have that day off. So get to sleep on time, and bright and early Tuesday morning (it's back to work)."

Siuslaw will be taking on a 3A team that dropped its season opener, 31-14 to Dayton at Pleasant Hill.

The Far West League Vikings are the only 4A team on the 2015 schedule for the Billies, who play in the Mountain Valley Conference with Coquille/Pacific, Harrisburg, Glide, Creswell and La Pine.

Elsewhere Friday night, four future Vikings opponents opened their seasons with big wins, including league rivals North Bend/Oregon Coast Technology, Marshfield and Douglas and nonleague Hidden Valley, which hosts Siuslaw next week in Grants Pass.

League rivals South Umpqua and Brookings-Harbor both lost season openers on the road.
