Vikings host Pirates in FWL showdown


It's early in the Far West League girls volleyball race, but the winner of Thursday's match between the Siuslaw Vikings and Marshfield Pirates could go a long way in determining who crosses the finish line first.

Game time is about 6 p.m. at the Siuslaw High School gym, following a junior-varsity game scheduled for 5 p.m.

The Pirates will arrive in Florence with a 10-0 overall record and a No. 4 ranking by the Oregon School Activities Association.

Siuslaw is 4-1 and ranked No. 12, sharing first place in the Far West League with Marshfield and North Bend/Oregon Coast Technology at 1-0.

Tuesday night, the Vikings launched the 2015 season at Myrtle Point, rallying from a a first-game loss to beat the South Umpqua Lancers, 20-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-19.

Elyssa Rose had 11 kills and six blocks while fellow junior Claire Waggoner was 100 percent serving for the night with 10 points on serve and two aces.

"(Senior libero) Ali Scheer had 21 perfect serve-receive passes," coach Angie Herring noted, "and (she had) some great defensive plays."

For the Lancers, Emma Lind had 13 digs and 11 kills, while Alexis Westbrooks had 12 assists, eight digs and three aces.

The Pirates opened league play Monday night, stuffing Brookings-Harbor, 25-13, 25-9, 25-12. Marshfield defeated Hidden Valley in a nonleague match Tuesday, 25-16, 21-25, 22-25, 25-15, 15-11.

Siuslaw's one loss this season was to now No. 10-ranked Junction City, which lost its Sky-Em League opener to Sweet Home on Tuesday night in Junction City, 3-1.

Sisters (10-0) tops the OSAA rankings, with Banks No. 2 and Valley Catholic No. 3.

In other league play Tuesday, North Bend/Oregon Coast Technology beat Douglas in Winston, 25-19, 22-25, 15-25, 25-21, 15-13.
