Siuslaw girls 2nd, boys 6th in Prefontaine 5K


Junior Celie Mans finished second to defending champion Marissa Dobry of St. Mary's in the high school varsity division of the 36th annual Prefontaine Memorial Run on Saturday in Coos Bay.

Mans completed the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 58.3 seconds. Dobry, a senior who was second to Bandon's Sailor Hutton in last year's state 3A/2A/1A championships, ran an 18:03.7.

"Celie ran a tough race, but I was even more excited by how she closed," Siuslaw coach Chris Johnson said. "She is fit because of her commitment to year-round training."

Times for other Siuslaw girls runners included Morgan Bingham, 19:45.4; Kaeli Ramos, 21:35.5; Mikaela Siegel, 21:59.3; Sierra Potter, 22:27.3; Destinie Tatum, 23:10.4; Lainey Goss, 23:54.9, and Hayleigh Middleton, 25:51.6.

St. Mary's won the team title with 52 points to 78 by the Vikings. Far West League rivals Marshfield (200 points) and North Bend (203) were sixth and seventh.

Siuslaw's boys team finished sixth with 183 points, paced by freshman Murray Bingham's 17th-place finish of 17:41.4. Kellen O'Neill of Arcata, Calif., won in 16:07.5.

"We were delighted by the performances of (siblings) Morgan and Murray Bingham," Johnson said.

Grants Pass won the boys title with 50 points. Marshfield was fifth with 169, North Bend seventh with 217 and Brookings-Harbor 10th with 262.

Times for other Siuslaw boys runners included Kyle King, 18:20.0; Tyler Williams, 18:45.2; Isaac Griffes, 18:48.1; Jordan Northrop, 19:05.6; Ricky Huff, 21:36.2; Robert Mans, 21:46.6, and Andrew Rannow, 21:47.7.

Siuslaw's big home meet, the 27th annual Lake Woahink XC Invitational, is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at East Woahink Day Use Area.
