Sailor Hutton of Bandon and Celie Mans of Siuslaw finished 1-2 in the girls varsity race in the annual Lake Woahink Cross Country Invitational on Saturday at Honeyman State Park.

Hutton finished in 18 minutes, 43.6 seconds and Mans in 19:14.7. Mans chopped more than a minute off her 2014 time for the 5,000-meter event.

"I wanted to go out there strong and I did, the first mile," Mans said. "I was trying to stay strong the first mile and see how it went from there."

The Vikings were third in the team race with 68 points, with 6A schools South Eugene and West Linn 1-2 with 55 and 61 points, respectively.

Also scoring for the Siuslaw girls were junior Morgan Bingham (sixth), freshman Kaeli Ramos (15th) and seniors Mikaela Siegel (26th) and Sierra Potter (27th).

Bingham, a transfer, and Ramos, a freshman, were running the event for the first time. Siegel and Potter had their best times in their last run in the event.

"We're improving a ton in practice, and it's starting to show through," Mans said. "It's really cool because we're running well every meet."

West Linn dominated the varsity boys 5,000-meter race, with a team-best 43 points to 98 by Bandon and South Eugene. West Linn's Roman and Grayson Ollar finished 1-2 in the individual race in 16:16.5 and 16.20.5.

Scoring for the Siuslaw boys were freshman Murray Bingham (15th in 17:53.8), sophomores Isaac Griffes (30th) and Kyle King (35th),  junior Sean Burns (52nd) and senior Tyler Williams (55th).

"I love to run. I've been running since the fourth grade," Murray Bingham said. "I want to break 17 minutes (for the 5,000 meters) this year, get in the 16-minute range."

Siuslaw's Chris Johnson, who wore the twin hats of coach and meet director Saturday, was generally happy with what he saw.

"The boys have been kind of banged up," Johnson said. "We took a step in the right direction. I think when Jack (Pickell) and Drew (Rannow) get fit, that makes us stronger."

Johnson will need every man on board to make the 4A state meet, which takes the top two teams from each district.

"We have a long way to go, and we got beat by two teams (Brookings-Harbor and North Bend) in our league (today)," Johnson said. "Our ultimate goal is to make the state meet, and we haven't missed a state meet (as a team) in 15 years."

Less concerning is the girls team, with Mans, Bingham, Ramos, Siegel and Potter all capable of scoring high for the Vikings, who are ranked No. 1 in the coaches' poll.

Still, the team has been at less than full strength.

Ramos' twin sister, Trinity, has been hurt, as has Potter, who also had to deal with a recent bout of the flu.

"The girls are a little banged up, too," Johnson said. "But we're getting there."

NOTES: Zimri Ramos, the eighth-grade brother of the Vikings' freshman twin sisters, Kaeli and Trinity, won the boys' middle school division. Johnson's son, Kiger, was sixth.
