Retired college coach to guide Vikings

Will Biggs and his wife, Marisa Hawk, attended Monday's meeting of the Siuslaw Athletic Booster Club at the high school library.

Retired college basketball coach Will Biggs has been named the new boys' basketball coach at Siuslaw High School, Vikings' athletic director Jeromy Graybill announced Monday.

Biggs was head basketball coach at California State University East Bay for 16 seasons, from 1997 to 2013, when he retired as the school's longest-tenured coach, holding school records for coaching victories (223) and winning percentage (.514).

"I had a chance to see a Siuslaw game last season," Biggs said. "They had some good young talent.

"I don't know enough about the level of competition, but from the talent I saw, I'm optimistic we'll do OK."

Biggs and his wife, Marisa Hawk, bought their house in Florence in 2012, and moved in full-time in 2014.

"He retired to Oregon to catch fish, big fish," Graybill wrote in his Monday news release.

"I'm still looking to catch some big fish," Biggs said during a phone interview, laughing.

Biggs, from Pleasanton, Calif., in the San Francisco bay area, began his career at James Logan High School in Union City, leading the Colts to five league titles and three consecutive trips to the Northern California championships.

Biggs next was head coach at Ohlone College, a junior college in Fremont, Calif., for two years before taking over as head coach at Cal State East Bay.

"(Cal State East Bay) was a great place to work, a wonderful place," Biggs said. "I enjoyed it a lot."

He led the Pioneers to two Cal Pac Conference titles and five trips to the NAIA Division II national championships. In 2009, Cal State East Bay rejoined the NCAA Division II as a member of the California Collegiate Association.

Biggs and his wife have two grown children, Alison and Barry, who live in the Bay Area.

Biggs replaces Jack Butler, who resigned after three seasons with the Vikings.

First day of practice for Biggs and the Vikings is Nov. 16.
