Siuslaw sophomore Ricky Huff captured the 113-pound title Saturday, Dec. 5, in the season-opening Perry Burlison Wrestling Classic at Cascade High School in Turner.
Coast Radio named Huff its Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, Dec. 8.
Huff, 3-0 in the event, won by decision over Joseph Foster of Dallas in the championship match, 10-5. Earlier, he posted an 8-6 decision over Jacob Jones of Dallas and 4-2 over Jacob Whitehead of Silverton.
"It was a great day for Ricky," Siuslaw coach Neil Wartnik said. "The field at this tournament was especially keen. There were 5-10 outstanding teams. So for Ricky to win the tournament was quite an accomplishment."
He also got standout performances from junior Eyza Abbas, who was second in her weight class, and freshman Murray Bingham.
"Murray Bingham wrestled very well in his first varsity competition," Wartnik said. "Otherwise, it was a great opener for the kids. They competed against some of the finest teams in Oregon, and they know better what they are up against.
"It means a lot to come home with one champion. It shows that we can compete with the best."
Bingham (132 pounds), senior Talamoa Tupua (160) and junior Kainan Lane (285 pounds) were each 1-2 Saturday.
Matthew Morales (106) and Scott Simmons (145) were 0-2.
Next up for the Vikings is the Springfield Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday.
