South Umpqua upsets Siuslaw, 41-34

Thursday's game didn't start well for the Siuslaw Vikings girls basketball team.

It didn't end well, either, as the visiting South Umpqua Lancers rallied for a 41-34 Far West League victory at Glen Butler Court.

"That puts a sting on us, that really hurts," Clint Tatum said. "We'd have to win out (the final four games) to have any chance at the postseason."

Siuslaw is now 1-5 in league play and 5-12 overall, with games against the league's top two teams next week, at Marshfield on Tuesday and home against Brookings-Harbor on Friday.

"Our schedule now is just a juggernaut schedule," Vikings coach Clint Tatum said. "But we'll let it sting tonight, and come back tomorrow."

Thursday, point guard and second-leading scorer Sierra Potter injured her left wrist five minutes into the game and sat the rest of the first half.

Leading scorer Destinie Tatum joined Potter on the bench after picking up her third foul early in the second quarter.

Somehow, the Vikings managed a halftime lead, 17-15, as Tatum returned to score six points in the final three minutes before the break.

Then Potter returned to action in the second half, her left hand bandaged.

"Her wrist got stepped on, smashed into the court," Clint Tatum said. "I just taped it up for her to feel more secure with it. It looked like it affected her shot a little."

Their big guns back on the court, the Vikings outscored the Lancers 12-7 to take a 29-22 lead into the fourth quarter.

The it all unravelled.

The Lancers went on an 11-1 run to grab a 33-30 lead with 3:54 to play. South Umpqua outscored the Vikings 19-5 in the final quarter to win going away.

It was the first league win in six tries and only the second win in 19 games this season for the Lancers.

"Our offense seemed to work OK tonight, when we ran it," Clint Tatum said. "Defensively, it might have been our worst defensive night of the year."

Daughter Destinie Tatum finished with a team-high 14 points. She also had 9 rebounds and just the 3 early fouls.

Senior Taylor Dotson pitched in with a team-high 10 rebounds and 2 blocked shots before fouling out midway through the fourth quarter.

Freshman Annabel Tapua provided a big spark off the bench with 6 points, including a three-point play to start the third quarter and a coast-to-coast layin to end it.

"Tapua was really hustling hard, but she needs to work on her layups a bit," Clint Tatum said.

She will be getting her opportunities in the final games.

"We need to start getting better for next year," the Vikings coach said. "We're pretty much playing for next year now."
