Wrestling: Four Vikings qualify for state championships


Talamoa Tupua, Siuslaw coach Neil Wartnik and Dylan Jennings will be heading to Portland this week for the state championships.
Siuslaw senior Dylan Jennings won an individual title Saturday as four Vikings qualified for next week's 4A state wrestling championships at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

Senior Talamoa Tupua, sophomore Ricky Huff and freshman Murray Bingham also punched their tickets to state with top-four finishes in the 4A Special District 3 regional championships at Henley High School in Klamath Falls.

Jennings, the top seed at 220, pinned No. 6 seed Dallas Lamphere of Henley in the championship match in 2 minutes, 36 seconds.

Jennings won all three of his matches over two days by pin.

Tupua, seeded No. 2 at 152, lost a 5-3 decision to top seed Austin Tillery of Henley in the championship match.

Huff pinned Oscar Baza of Henley in 1:21 for third place at 113.

Bingham won by rule over Nakai Sinohui of South Umpqua in the fourth-place match at 126.

Siuslaw finished fifth in the 12-school field, second among the six Far West League schools, with 124 points.

Host Henley took the team title with 366 points. Marshfield was second with 341.5.

Jennings scored 28 team points, Tupua 24 and Huff and Bingham 20 each.

Vikings freshman Matthew Morales was fifth at 106 and scored 11 team points, while junior Kainan Lane, who qualified for state as a sophomore, was fifth at 285 and scored 9 team points.

Junior Scott Simmons was sixth place at 138 and scored 9 team points.

NOTES

Dylan Jennings has been named to the 2016 East-West Shrine all-star football game, which will be played Aug. 6 in Baker City, Oregon. The game features the top graduating seniors from Classes 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A schools. Vikings quarterback Preston Mitchell was named as an alternate. ...
