Vikings keep playoff hopes alive, win 14-8

Vikings senior Kenneth Thrall (left) and head coach Tony Castro are still thinking playoffs with three games to play.

The Siuslaw Vikings kept alive their slim playoff hopes with a 14-8 victory over Douglas in a Far West League baseball game Tuesday at John "Jiggs" Dodson Stadium.

It was Senior Night for the Vikings, who honored graduating players Ryan Denning, Scott Gordon, Michael Mason, Caleb Paredes and Kenneth Thrall in a pregame ceremony.

Siuslaw has three games remaining, all on the road, with a doubleheader Friday at league-leading North Bend and the season finale next Tuesday at second-place South Umpqua.

To reach the playoffs, the fourth-place Vikings likely would need to sweep those games while hoping third-place Brookings-Harbor goes 0-3 to close the regular season.

Siuslaw currently is 5-7 in league, the Bruins 7-5, with a doubleheader at home Friday with Souith Umpqua and a single game Tuesday at Marshfield.

The top three Far West League teams are assured a playoff berth. A fourth-place team would need a much better ranking than the Vikings' current No. 33 to make the 24-school Oregon School Activities Association 4A playoffs.

The Vikings have a road to the playoffs, though it be a bit dicy.

Siuslaw stayed on that road Tuesday with another rendition of its small-ball offense and some big-time help from the Trojans.

Thrall was 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs and a run scored and Gordon was 3-for-3 and scored 3 runs.

Gordon also started on the mound for the Vikings, tossing four shutout innings before tiring in the fifth.

Freshman lefthander Gabe Simington picked up the win in relief, facing five batters and retiring four, including the final out of the game on a swinging third strike.

The game featured 21 walks, including 13 issued by Douglas' four pitchers. Of the 14 runners who came around to score for the Vikings, 8 were on base by walk, 3 on errors, 2 on hits and 1 on hit by pitch.

The Vikings built an 8-0 lead through four innings. Thrall's 2-run single keyed a 3-run second inning and Siuslaw sent 11 runners to the plate in the fourth, scoring 5 runs without the benefit of a hit.

Douglas stormed back to tie the game with 6 in the top of the fifth and 2 in the sixth.

Siuslaw sophomore rightfielder Evan Teter made a sparkling catch for the third out with runners on second and third or the damage would have been worse in the fifth.

Douglas designated-hitter Tanner Metcalf smacked a 2-run double in the sixth to cap a 2-out rally in the sixth for the Trojans.

Siuslaw responded with 6 runs in the bottom of the sixth, sending 12 batters to the plate, the big hit Thrall's second 2-run single of the night.
