Siuslaw girls win Wally Ciochetti Invitational


Siuslaw junior Carissa Oliver set personal records in winning the shot put and discus and senior Mikaela Siegel and junior Annmarie Precht also won events Friday to help the Vikings win the girls team title at the Wally Ciochetti Invitational in Cottage Grove.

Junior Destinie Tatum turned in a school-record 2:17.71a to finish second in the 800 meters. The record previously was held by Raelyn Robinson, who ran a 2:18.23a in 2009.

The Siuslaw girls totaled 112 points to win by 33 points over second-place Scappoose in the 17-school field that included 16 4A schools and 5A La Salle Prep.

Vikings freshman Murray Bingham slashed 14 seconds off his personal record to win the 3,000 and sophomore Trent Reavis improved his discus personal record by nearly eight feet as the Siuslaw boys finished 10th.

The Cottage Grove event was the final tuneup for the Far West League district championships Friday and Saturday at Douglas High School in Winston.

The Oregon School Activities Association 4A state championships are the following weekend, May 20-21, at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Notable Vikings marks Friday included:

Girls

  • Oliver winning the shot put at 38 feet, 6 inches and the discus at 129-9. Oliver currently is No. 5 among 4A girls this season in the shot put and No. 2 in the discus.
  • Siegel winning the 100 hurdles in 16.31a while finishing fifth in the 300 hurdles in 48.77a and sixth in the triple jump at 31-9. The state 4A defending champion in the 100 hurdles, Siegel has the state's best 4A time this season of 15.75a.
  • Precht winning the long jump at 17-0 while finishing second in both the 100 (13.14a) and 200 (26.77a).
  • Tatum finishing third in the high jump at 4-10 and anchoring the second-place 4x400 relay team. Her 800 time is No. 2 on the state's 4A top-10 list this season.
  • Junior Morgan Bingham finishing second in the 1,500 at 4:58.10a and fifth in the 800 in a personal-record 2:23.92a.
  • Junior Celie Mans finishing fourth in the 800 with a personal-record 2:22.76a and third in the 3,000 in 11:10.35a.
  • The 4x400 relay team of Kaeli Ramos, Precht, Bingham and Tatum placing second in 4:09.03a, the No. 2 time among 4A schools this season. North Valley won the event with a 4A state-best time of 4:07.74a.

Boys

  • Bingham winning the 3,000 in 9:04.81a, more than 2 seconds ahead of runner-up Michael Brown of North Bend. Bingham moved up to No. 5 this season on the state 4A top-10 list.
  • Reavis finishing second in the shot put at 48-9.75, losing by a quarter of an inch, and placing fourth in the discus at 149-2, moving him to No. 4 on the Siuslaw boys top-10 list. Reavis is currently No. 3 in the state in the shot put and No. 4 in the discus among 4A boys this season.
