Summer league play tips off Monday

The 2016-17 Lady Vikings will lose only three players to graduation: Anna Minten (5), Sierra Potter (1) and Taylor Dotson (33).

The Siuslaw High School girls basketball team is filling out its dance card for summer league play.

The team tips off Monday, June 13, with games against Toledo and Waldport at the Waldport High School gym.

"We highly encourage all girls interested in playing basketball (for the Vikings) to participate in summer ball," Vikings girls coach Clint Tatum said.

"(Players) will be ahead of other student athletes because many of the skills, drills and plays you learn this summer will be used in the winter season."

Tatum says other games will be scheduled, but currently the team is set for a tournament at Philomath June 18-19, a Viking Basketball Camp June 20-24 at the Siuslaw High School main gym and games with Gervais and Waldport at Siuslaw on June 27.

The camp will be held from 9 a.m. to noon each day. Game times are not yet available.

"We're hoping to have a guest coach each day of the camp," Tatum said.

Tatum is being assisted by Greg Reynolds.

The Vikings lose three players to graduation, including starters Sierra Potter and Taylor Dotson and reserve Anna Minten, an exchange student from Belgium.

Four seniors-to-be will assume key roles for the Vikings in 2016-17, including leading scorer Destinie Tatum and guards Nikki Launius, Claire Waggoner and Abby Watkins.

Also expected back are juniors-to-be Carreina Greenburg and Marika White and sophomores-to-be Madison Reynolds and Annabel Tupua.
