Soccer season set to launch at Miller Park

The Siuslaw Youth Soccer Association has a problem as it prepares to launch its first season Saturday.

But it's a good problem.

"We had so many more kids sign up than we ever dreamt possible this first season," the SYSA announced on its Facebook page. "Because we had such an amazing turnout it will take an extra day to sort teams."

The SYSA's goal is to nurture and grow soccer in the Florence area, serving youth ages 5 to 18.

The City of Florence has provided new goalposts, which have been positioned between the softball fields at Miller Park.

Registration ended Friday (Sept. 9), evaluations were Saturday (Sept. 10) and practice begins Monday (Sept. 12). First matches on the Miller Park pitch are Saturday.

The first season also will include road trips to Newport for matches Oct. 8 and Oct. 29 with the Central Coast Soccer Association.

"The board has been working since assessments on Saturday to sort teams," the SYSA said, and is trying to place players on teams "as fairly as possible, keeping in mind buddy requests, coaching requests and special circumstances."

The SYSA plans to expand on the program previously offered by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Lane County, which no longer will offer the sport.

SYSA officers include president Cameron Jagoe, vice president Erin Linton, treasurer Londi Tomaro, secretary Tim Tregoning and registrar Amy Tregoning.

The SYSA is affiliated with the Oregon Youth Soccer Association.
