Siuslaw comeback stuns Marshfield, 3-2


The Siuslaw Vikings volleyball team has a message for the rest of the Far West League: Don't take us to five sets.

Siuslaw dominated set 5 for the second match in a row as the Vikings beat Marshfield, 3-2, Thursday at Coos Bay.

Siuslaw won 18-25, 22-25, 25-18, 25-23, 15-5 to improve to 4-4 overall and 2-0 in league, tied with North Bend for first place.

The Vikings beat South Umpqua in five sets Tuesday in their league opener, winning the fifth set 15-3.

Also Thursday in league play, North Bend beat South Umpqua 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 17-25, 25-23) and Douglas defeated Brookings-Harbor 3-1 (25-19, 25-9, 28-30, 25-21).

With the win, Siuslaw moved to No. 19 in the Oregon School Activities Association rankings. North Bend is No. 14, Douglas No. 20, Marshfield No. 23, South Umpqua No. 25 and Brookings-Harbor 33.

Rankings are as of 6 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, and are continually updated.

Marshfield got 20 kills and 4 aces from Alex Locati and 30 assists and 4 aces from Ravyn Miranda. No individual statistics were available for Siuslaw.

The Pirates dominated early, but the Vikings started to assert themselves after falling behind 21-7 in the second set. Siuslaw lost the set but rallied to make it close.

Then came the sweep of the next three sets, including 15-5 in the fifth.

North Bend's Amanda Powley celebrated her 16th birthday with 33 assists and 11 digs against South Umpqua. Olivia Peck had 9 kills and 10 digs, Drew Culver 10 digs and 4 aces and Brooke Aldrich 8 kills.

For the Lancers, Shalyn Gray had 11 kills and 18 digs and Sydnie Johnson 29 assists and 11 digs.

For Douglas, Darian Mitchell and Rachel Hickam combined for 27 kills.

The Vikings have two home matches next week, hosting Brookings-Harbor on Tuesday and Douglas on Thursday.
