Vikings thump Newport for first win, 37-7

Junior tight end-defensive end Trent Reavis had three touchdowns, two on pass receptions and one on an interception return.
The Siuslaw Vikings football team has had three head coaches deliver wins over the past half century.

Friday night, first-year coach Jamin Pool got his first, a 37-7 victory over the long-time rival Newport Cubs at Hans Petersen Field.

"It was nice to get it off my chest," Pool said of the win. "But it's more about our players and them feeling it. That's the big thing.

"I'm happy for them. I've experienced it, and I know what it feels like, know what it takes. I'm happy for what's to come next."

Pool was promoted to head coach this year when Tim Dodson retired after 20 seasons, 152 wins and one state title. Len Lutero had 196 wins and a state title in 29 seasons before giving way to Dodson in 1996.

"The tradition of it all is great," Pool said of the win. "But it's still a W to me. Next week we'll work on win No. 2."

The icing on Pool's first win was a a breakout night by 6-foot-7 junior tight end-defensive end Trent Reavis, who scored three times in the game and had a fourth TD called back.

"Reavis had a great game," Pool said. "We challenged him this week, and he stepped up. Everyone just witnessed what our coaches already knew, what he's capable of, taking over a game.

"And he's capable of that every night."

Reavis scored on two touchdown passes from junior quarterback Jared Brandt. The first — 11 yards with 6:59 on the clock in the first quarter — produced the only points of the first half.

The Vikings took control right away to begin the second half, with Reavis recovering a Newport fumble on the second play. Brandt immediately hit Reavis on a hitch play that went 44 yards for a TD and a 12-0 Siuslaw lead.

"That was effort, that was heart, that is something we've talked to him about playing with that much effort all the time," Pool said.

Reavis concurred.

"I guess I've always wanted to be a small, quick guy all my life," Reavis said, with a big grin. "I'm starting to come around, lower the boom and keep running."

Reavis also scored on a 38-yard interception return in the fourth quarter on a pass he tipped, then controlled.

He also would have scored on a stripped ball, late in the fourth quarter, when he ran 85 yards to the Newport end zone. Instead, he got credit for his second fumble recovery of the game when the ball was called back on a penalty following the turnover.

The Vikings offense then took a knee three times to run out the final 1:40 of the game.

Junior running back Quincey Rusk also scored twice for the Vikings, rushing 16 times for a team-high 86 yards and TD runs of 13 and 1 yards.

Vikings senior Nick Steinman scored on a 69-yard interception return two plays before Reavis returned his interception for a score.

The only serious sour note was the Vikings converting on only one of six extra-point attempts.

Newport finally broke into the end zone with 6:35 left in the game when senior Sam Imbler-Bremner capped an 11-play, 50-yard drive with a 2-yard TD run.

The victory was the first in three games for the Vikings, who suffered losses to Elmira (35-14) and Pleasant Hill (41-14) to open the season.

The win was important for the playoff hopes of the Vikings, who have an unbalanced schedule of five road games and three home games this season.

The win also gave a Siuslaw a 33-27-1 lead in the series with Newport since 1949, according to Siuslaw football historian Don Hunt. (Hunt, a former Medford sportswriter and Siuslaw graduate, has a book on Siuslaw football due out later this fall.)

Newport fell to 0-3, and has been outscored 145-14 this season.

Siuslaw opens Far West League play Friday against Douglas at Winston.

Newport opens Oregon West Conference play at home against North Marion.
