Vikings take a tumble at Douglas, 53-0

Douglas lost the ball on a fumble on the Trojans' second play from scrimmage. Siuslaw gave it back on a fumble seven plays later.

The Siuslaw Vikings lost their Far West League football opener at Douglas on Friday, 53-0.

Now the road to the postseason really gets rough.

No. 1-ranked North Bend — which rolled 49-7 at Brookings-Harbor in its league opener — comes to town this Friday, followed by road games at Marshfield and South Umpqua.

If you're thinking South Umpqua will be relatively easy, think again. The Lancers spanked Marshfield 42-20 Friday night in their league opener at Tri City.

The gauntlet ends with a home date against Brookings-Harbor on Oct. 21, which will be homecoming and senior recognition night.

"We took some steps back today," Siuslaw coach Jamin Pool said after Friday's loss. "We didn't play up to our potential.

"We need to improve on that, but we'll be all right."

The Vikings were operating without three key players, all out with injuries, including starting quarterback Jared Brandt and starting wideout Evan Teter.

Mason Wampler also was out. He has been the No. 2 running back option behind Quincy Rusk.

The Vikings moved top wide receiver Trent Reavis to quarterback to cover for Brandt.

"We still have to perform when we made all those changes," Pool said. "We wouldn't have made those changes if we didn't believe in our guys."

Reavis was steady at quarterback, connecting with 12 of 27 passes for 110 yards. He also ran twice for 12 yards.

Reavis also was intercepted twice, the first just before halftime, short-circuiting a promising 62-yard drive, and the second to open the second half.

The Vikings also lost the ball twice on fumbles.

Siuslaw had the ball 12 times in the game, losing the ball on turnovers four times, punting four times and turning the ball over on downs four times.

As tough as things were for the Vikings' offense, it was a nightmare for the defense.

The Trojans had 276 yards passing and 261 yards rushing for 537 total yards. The Vikings had 155 yards total.

Douglas senior quarterback Carter Dahl passed for two touchdowns and ran for a third, while junior running back Damon Landry scored three rushing touchdowns, from the 13, 1 and 1.

Douglas won for only the ninth time in 30 games with Siuslaw since the first meeting in 1955. It also was the Trojans' largest margin of victory, surpassing the 40-14, 26-point triumph in 2008.

For the Trojans, their reward is a 3-1 record to start the season and a trip to Marshfield on Friday.

For the Vikings, it's back to the drawing board to prep for the state's current top-ranked Class 4A school, North Bend.

Pool sees a silver lining.

"We're at home," he said. "That's a good thing."
