$20,000 set aside for capital improvements

The Siuslaw Athletic Booster Club is thinking big as it goes about setting goals for this school year, and possibly beyond.

To that end, the club voted Monday at its monthly meeting to set aside $20,000 for a new capital-improvement fund.

Big-ticket items might include resurfacing the track at Hans Petersen Field, or finding a way to honor the school's rich sports tradition with a Hall of Fame building.

In other business, the club:

  • Established a committee to explore the possibility of a booster club building that would house the Hall of Fame.
  • Voted to fund the Ian Foster Fund this year up to $8,000, less monies raised from donations. The fund is used for scholarship money to pay for middle school and high school participation fees.
  • Voted to put $3,000 in a scholarship fund for graduating Siuslaw student-athletes.
  • Approved $500 to cover expenses for a fun run-walk fundraiser Thanksgiving weekend. Last fall, the club sponsored a fitness run with an Oregon-Oregon State Civil War theme.
  • Kept alive the concept of a bingo night fundraiser at Three Rivers Casino Resort. No date was agreed to, but the weekend of the Rhododendron Festival in May was a popular suggestion.
  • Asked Bob Teter to explore the possibility of a summer 2017 fundraiser that would involve either a basketball or volleyball tournament.

The club (read that: Gina Castro-Brandt) still is seeking a permanent president, but seems to be more than content with Castro-Brandt serving indefinitely as acting president.

The next monthly meeting of the SABC is 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, at the Siuslaw High School library.

The club normally meets the final Monday of the month, but opted not to compete with Halloween.
