Junior Jake Hickson came off the bench to lead four Vikings in double figures with 15 points Wednesday as the Siuslaw boys basketball team opened the Dylan Perry coaching era with a 65-48 nonleague victory over the visiting Creswell Bulldogs.

Siuslaw (1-0) will host Elmira in a nonleague game at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Elmira lost its season opener Wednesday to visiting Newport, 73-38.

"I'm happy for these kids to start out with a win. They deserve it," Perry said. "They work hard.

"I have high expectations of this team. And so do they of themselves."

Senior Kyle King and junior Trent Reavis, who both finished with 14 points, had 12 each in the second half as the Vikings pulled away from a 25-25 halftime tie.

Senior reserve Ricky Jones added 10 points, hitting two 3-pointers and all four of his free throws.

"We got in foul trouble early on in the game," Perry said. "Our bench stepped up huge tonight. They kept us in the game in the first half keeping it 25-25 at halftime."

Reserves accounted for 31 of the Vikings' 65 points, including the 25 from Hickson and Jones.

The Vikings had 17 of their 26 personal fouls by halftime, with each of the five starters — Brogan Cornish, Jared Brandt, Marcos Reyna-Ayala, King and Reavis — with two each. Reavis was the only Viking to foul out.

The Bulldogs finished with 31 fouls. The Vikings hit 13 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter and outscored Creswell 24-11 in the period to win going away.

"Our defense clamped down in the fourth quarter and we secured the victory," Perry said.

Junior Trey Magnuson led the Bulldogs with 15 points to share game-high honors with Hickson.
