Vikings may play league games in Medford

The Siuslaw Vikings may be playing league games in Medford and Grants Pass under the most-recent districting and classification models under consideration by the Oregon School Activities Association.

The OSAA's Classification and Districting Committee for the 2018-2022 four-year time block had its third public hearing Monday, Dec. 12, in Wilsonville.

Following the meeting, the committee released a revised six-classification model, a five-classification model and a football-only model.

Under the proposed six-classification model, Siuslaw would be part of a Class 4A Far West League that includes:

  • Cottage Grove Lions
  • Creswell Bulldogs
  • Douglas Trojans
  • Elmira Falcons
  • Siuslaw Vikings
  • South Umpqua Lancers
  • Sutherlin Bulldogs

Under the proposed five-classification model, Siuslaw would be part of a Class 3A Southern Cascade League that includes:

  • Brookings-Harbor Bruins
  • Cascade Christian Challengers (Medford)
  • Douglas Trojans
  • Hidden Valley Mustangs (Grants Pass)
  • North Valley Knights (Grants Pass)
  • Siuslaw Vikings
  • South Umpqua Lancers
  • Sutherlin Bulldogs
  • St. Mary's Crusaders (Medford)

The above model would have the Vikings traveling more than 3 hours — one way — for league games in Brookings, Grants Pass and Medford, and two hours one way to Winston and Tri City.

Also under consideration is a football-only classification, with Siuslaw part of Special District 4 that includes:

  • Cottage Grove Lions
  • Elmira Falcons
  • Junction City Tigers
  • Marshfield Pirates
  • North Bend Bulldogs
  • North Eugene Highlanders
  • Philomath Warriors
  • Siuslaw Vikings

Next meeting for the committee is 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 30, at the OSAA office in Wilsonville, at which time the goal is to decide on six or five classifications.

The committee will hold public testimony in the morning followed by a closed work session later in the day.

Written suggestions and proposals should be emailed to the OSAA at bradg@osaa.org.
