Vikings soccer to play in Sky-Em next fall

The Siuslaw Vikings will field a varsity boys soccer team next fall, according to a summary of an Oregon School Activities Association executive board meeting released Friday.

Siuslaw fielded its first-ever soccer team this past fall, combining interested boys and girls on a team that competed as a boys junior varsity. The Vikings were 0-4-1.

The Vikings will compete in the Sky-Em League with Cottage Grove, Elmira, Junction City, Marist and Marshfield.

"We coaches are set to meet with Andy G about next season this month," Vikings coach Londi Tomaro said, referring to Siuslaw School District superintendent Andy Grzeskowiak, who has been a major supporter of the program.

"I think I can safely say that girls will be playing on the boys team and we will continue to build towards a girls team."

The 52-page meeting summary also included:

  • Siuslaw was fined $100 and faces varsity forfeitures for playing ineligible junior varsity players in three matches, a violation of OSAA Rule 8.6 - transfer. Details were not announced.
  • The board voted to allow Marshfield to continue to compete at the 4A level despite exceeding the adjusted ADM for the classification. Marshfield competes in the Sky-Em League with most of Siuslaw's varsity teams.
  • The girls state wrestling tournament this season will combine all schools into North and South Districts. Siuslaw — which has four girls on its varsity roster — will compete in the South for state berths.
  • The board is aggressively reviewing and amending its gender identity participation policy. A first reading is available in the meeting summary.
