Former Siuslaw Vikings pitcher Jake Thompson begins his third season as a pro today (Feb. 12) as pitchers and catchers report to the Boston Red Sox spring training facility in Fort Myers, Fla.
Thompson, an all-American at Oregon State, was ranked as the No. 24 prospect in the Red Sox minor-league system in the most-recent MLB.com prospect watch.
Thompson was a fourth-round selection in the 2017 MLB June amateur draft.
The 6-foot-1 righthander is 5-16 over two minor-league seasons, striking out 107 in 137 innings pitched and posting a 5.12 earned run average.
Recent online speculation has Thompson returning to the Salem (Va.) Red Sox of the Class A-Advanced Carolina League for the start of the 2019 season.
Thompson won five games and threw 125 2-3 innings last season at Salem.
Thompson turns 25 this coming Sept. 22.
