Sutherlin slides by Siuslaw in opener, 7-5

Vikings sophomore Elijah Blankenship

Sutherlin snapped a 3-3 tie with a 3-run rally in the top of the fifth and held on for a 7-5 victory over the Siuslaw Vikings in a nonleague baseball game Thursday at Jiggs Dodson Stadium.

The second game was called with 1 out in the top of the fourth due to darkness, with the visiting Bulldogs leading 7-0.

Siuslaw, 1-1, next will host Pleasant Hill at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Sutherlin, 1-1, has its home opener Tuesday, hosting Glide in a twin bill.

In the opener, Elijah Blankenship was 3-for-3 with an RBI with a stolen base to lead the Vikings offense. Jared Northrop and Dalton Stinger had a single each for the only other hits by Siuslaw.

Only 2 of Sutherlin's 7 runs were earned as Siuslaw committed 5 errors and issued 10 walks.

Cade Meisner had 3 hits and 3 RBIs for the Bulldogs.

"We made too many mistakes in this game," Siuslaw coach Tom Shinn said. "You aren't going to win many making five errors.

"Thirteen strikeouts, eight of which were looking, kills a lot of innings. In four innings we struck out with runners on base. In three of those innings we had runners in scoring position.

"Putting the ball in play is important. Put pressure on the defense to make a play, but when you don't do that, you make the game a lot easier for your opponent."

In the nightcap, Vikings starter Tim Lowder had 7 strikeouts and 7 walks in 3-plus innings.

Coast Radio carried the games online, beginning at the bottom of the first inning of the opener. Wayne Sharpe provided play-by-play, while Randy Paredes added color commentary.
