Icebreaker is hot ticket for competing teams

Siuslaw's Brea Blankenship won the 1,500 in the Icebreaker, Grants Pass Rotary and Far West League championships as a freshman.

The 14th annual Siuslaw Icebreaker track and field meet will feature familiar faces and schools Thursday at Hans Petersen Field.

Five schools will compete, including three for the 14th time — 2A Coquille, 5A North Bend and 4A Siuslaw.

"There is a waiting list for the meet," Siuslaw coach Chris Johnson said. "Everyone is fond of early season meets, but evidentially not many are fond of hosting them.

"So I've been pretty loyal to the teams that have been coming for a long time."

Douglas, now a 3A school, has been an Icebreaker staple since 2010. Mapleton, a 1A school, is a first-time invitee.

Siuslaw has hosted as many as nine schools (2010 and 2011) and an event-low four last spring.

"If we get too many teams and don't have entry limits — and I try not to — those events get really crowded," Johnson said.

"For example, we have had as many as nine flights in the discus and javelin, up to 18 with both genders. (That's a) long night. If I keep it to five teams it's manageable."

This year's icebreaker also may have some familiar names taking individual titles. Of the 29 individual events last spring, 24 were won by underclassmen.

North Bend dominated, with the boys winning 11 of 14 individual events and the Lady Bulldogs 9 of 15. (There was no pole vault event for the boys.)

Siuslaw was successful in four events, the boys and girls 1,500 meters and 3,000.

The Vikings' Jonah Jarman won the 1,500 and Brendon Jensen the 3,000, while Siuslaw freshman Brea Blankenship won the girls 1,500 and Hannah Rannow the 3,000.

The Vikings also won both 4x400 relay races, the boys featuring Ryan Jennings, Kiger Johnson, Jonah Jarman and Brendon Jensen, the girls Brea Blankenship, Kaylee Graham, Hannah Rannow and Gracie Freudenthal.

"The distance races will be fun (Thursday), and North Bend's 100-meter boy (2018 4A champion Jonathan Chilcote) will be worth the price of admission," Johnson said.

NOTES

The anticipated battle between two 4A state javelin champions, Siuslaw's Ryan Rendon-Padilla (2018) and North Bend's Ty Hampton (2017), will not happen. ...

"Ryan is out indefinitely with a knee injury, so no javelin showdown," Johnson said. "Everyone else is healthy." ...

The Vikings will be on the road next week, Tuesday at the Sky-Em League JV meet at Junction City and Saturday, April 6, at the Marist Track Classic.
