Spartans top Vikings in league opener, 14-0

Junior shortstop Caleb Hennessee was 2-for-2 against Marist with a double.

Marist Catholic rallied for nine runs in the bottom of the third inning Tuesday as the Spartans opened Sky-Em League baseball play with a 14-0 victory over the Siuslaw Vikings in Eugene.

The Vikings fell to 0-1 in league and 1-7 overall, while the Spartans are 1-0 and 5-4.

"We couldn't get out of our own way," Siuslaw coach Tom Shinn told Wayne Sharpe and Randy Paredes in the Coast Radio post-game show. "A nine-run third makes it hard to win ball games.

"Our timing was off early. We were late getting here, late getting warned up."

Siuslaw next will host Junction City in a twin bill Friday at Dodson Field. First pitch is 3 p.m.

Marist senior Will Bullock pitched the first four innings, limiting the Vikings to three hits while striking out eight. Junior JJ Anderson pitched the fifth for the Spartans.

Junior Caleb Hennessee was 2-for-2 with a double and sophomore Dalton Stinger added a double.

Elsewhere, Marshfield hosted Cottage Grove.

The Junction City at Elmira game is scheduled for Wednesday.
