Elmira takes two from Vikings, 5-2 and 10-0

Elmira sophomore Ayden Wolgamott spun a two-hit shutout, striking out 13 over five innings, as the Sky-Em League-leading Falcons swept a baseball doubleheader from the visiting Siuslaw Vikings.

Elmira, 5-0 in league and 11-2 overall, won 5-2 and 10-0.

Siuslaw, dropping its 12th game in a row, fell to 0-6 in league and 1-12 overall.

Next week, Siuslaw plays at Marshfield on Tuesday and hosts Marist Catholic in a twin bill on Friday.

Vikings senior left-hander Gabe Simington struck out 11 over 5 1-3 innings in the opener, throwing 73 of 113 pitches for strikes.

Junior Jared Northrop and sophomore Chayton James were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore Elijah Blankenship had a stolen base and scored a run.

"We had several scoring chances that we didn't complete," Siuslaw coach Tom Shinn said of the first game. "In the third, fourth and seventh innings we left runners on base in scoring position.

"We played a pretty good baseball game. We just didn't take advantage of opportunities given to us."

In the nightcap, Northrop was 1-for-3 with a steal and senior Tim Lowder 1-for-2 to account for all the Vikings hits.

Elmira held only a 2-0 lead heading to the bottom of the fifth, but plated eight runs to trigger the 10-run rule to end the game.

"We struggled again at the plate. We didn't put the ball in play nearly enough," Shinn said. "That made it a pretty easy defensive game for Elmira.

The weather got pretty bad in the bottom of the fifth inning, and that didn't help our game. The final score doesn't really reflect how well we were playing defensively up until that very wet bottom of the fifth."
