Bob Rannow earns U.S. Senior Open berth

Hannah Rannow has learned some lessons from her father, Bob — and, let it be known, vice versa.

Hannah is a standout runner at Siuslaw High School, Bob the PGA professional at Ocean Dunes Golf Links.

Sunday, Hannah ran the second-fastest girls 1,500 meters in school history at an elite meet in Portland.

Monday, Bob qualified for the U.S. Senior Open from June 27-30 at the 6,843-yard, par-70 Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame, Ind.

Father Bob says he drew a lot of motivation from watching his daughter compete.

"Sometimes in golf you enter a tournament, you might not be mentally that confident," Bob told Coast Radio. "At least that's my scenario.

"And I see my daughter just really mentally tough, so I kind of thought to myself, well, maybe I can kick my game up a notch. Sure enough, it was there."

Bob shot a 1-under-par 70 Monday at the Oregon Golf Association Golf Course in Woodburn,  then won a playoff with Tim Hval of Portland for the second of two qualifying berths.

Jeff Gallagher of Henderson, Nev., shot a 4-under 67 to win the qualifying event.

Other competitors in the 156-player U.S. Senior Open field include Mark Calcavecchia, Fred Couples, Fred Funk, Retief Goosen, Jay Haas, Hale Irwin, Peter Jacobsen, Jerry Kelly, Bernhard Langer, Davis Love III, Billy Mayfair, Rocco Mediate, Colin Montgomerie, Corey Pavin, Vijay Singh, Steve Stricker, David Toms, Duffy Waldorf and Tom Watson.

Toms won the 2018 tournament at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo., edging Miguel Angel Jimenez, Tim Petrovic and Kelly by one shot.

Next year's tournament will be played at Newport Country Club in Newport, R.I., June 25-28.
