Vikings poised to rewrite their record book

The Siuslaw Vikings football record book hasn't been updated since 2015. It's likely to be rewritten this season.

Siuslaw football coach Sam Johnson says the Vikings' record book is being updated.

Under Johnson, with his up-tempo offense, it also may be rewritten.

In only his second game as head coach, Johnson has a record-breaking quarterback in junior Elijah Blankenship.

Friday, Blankenship rewrote the record for passing yardage in a single game, slinging the ball 32 times for 318 yards in a 28-19 comeback victory at Philomath.

Until then, Gabe Haberly held the record of 307 yards, which he reached twice in the 2004 season, against La Pine and Elmira.

Haberly also holds the next three spots in the top 10 at 305 vs. La Pine, 295 vs. Junction City and 285 vs. Marist, all in the 2003 season.

Jef McClellan has the next two, 284 vs. Reedsport in 1977 and 262 vs. Crook County in 1978.

Rounding out the top 10 are Brandon Little with 260 vs. Myrtle Point in 2001 and John Johnson with 257 vs Molalla in 2009.

Blankenship takes another shot at the record book at 7 p.m. Friday when the Vikings host Newport in Siuslaw's home opener at Hans Petersen Memorial Field.

Blankenship's top targets after two games are sophomore wide receivers Braydon Thornton (16 catches, 264 yards, 2 TDs) and Isaac Garza (4-142).
