The Siuslaw Vikings girls cross country team is the Sky-Em League champion for 2019.

Thursday, the Lady Vikings edged Marist Catholic by one point at the district championships at Lane Community College in Eugene.

Siuslaw scored 32 points, Marist Catholic 33, Marshfield 91, Junction City 107 and Cottage Grove 113. The Siuslaw boys later won the team title by one point over Marist Catholic, 37-38.

"We ran about as well as we possibly could on both sides," Siuslaw coach Chris Johnson said. "Huge performances by Rylee (Colton) and Gracie (Freudenthal) for the girls.

"They are both so talented and now the confidence is coming which produces the kind of performances we saw today.

"For the boys, the two freshman (Samuel Ulrich and Kyle Hughes) really broke through. It's really fun to add that youth to our trio of seniors.

"We anticipated that it would be close on both sides, but never dreamed of a 1 point difference.

"Our kids came to run."

Siuslaw senior Hannah Rannow was second overall, while four teammates placed in the top 10.

Junction City junior Anika Thompson won the individual title in a personal-record 18 minutes, 1.3 seconds.

Rannow was second in 18:41.9, sophomore Rylee Colton fifth in a PR 19:32.8, junior Brea Blankenship seventh in a season-best 19:46.5, junior Gracie Freudenthal eighth in a PR 19:50.4 and senior Chloe Madden 10th in a season-best 20:06.5.

Senior Anne Wartnik was 13th in 20:48.4 and senior Bryn Clement 20th in a PR 22:12.6.

The Siuslaw and Marist teams plus Thompson return to the same course on Saturday, Nov. 9, to compete in the Oregon School Activities Association Class 4A championships.

The top five individual finishers in last year's state meet return in Tillamook senior Solace Bergeron, the defending champion;  Thompson; Tillamook junior Sarah Pullen, Rannow and Philomath senior Hannah Hernandez.
