Vikings tumble, now wait for first-round foe

The injury-depleted Siuslaw Vikings hit a pothole Friday on their road to the Oregon School Activities Association Class 3A football playoffs.

The Sutherlin Bulldogs secured second place in the Special District 2 North standings with a 56-18 victory over the visiting Vikings.

Siuslaw finished the regular season 6-3 overall and 3-2 in league. Sutherlin finished 7-2 and 4-1.

The Vikings now await the final rankings Saturday night that will determine the first-round road opponent.

Based on rankings Saturday morning, the No. 16 Vikings likely would be at either of two unbeaten teams, No. 1 Hidden Valley or No. 3 Burns.

Siuslaw is matched with No. 2 Santiam Christian based on the actual pairings, but would move up or down to avoid two teams from the same league meeting in the first round.

The Vikings will go as the No. 3 seed in league, with Santiam Christian No. 1 and Sutherlin No. 2.

Friday, Sutherlin running back Josh Davis, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound junior, ran for four touchdowns for the Bulldogs. Senior running back Jacob Merrifield added TD runs of 20 and 35 yards.

Vikings sophomore wide receiver Braydon Thornton had receiving touchdowns of 50 and 85 yards in the first quarter. Junior running back Hector Garcia scored on a six-yard run in the third quarter.
