Vikings will be minus key players for playoffs

The Siuslaw Vikings football team will have some big-time contributors in street clothes for Friday's 3A playoff game at Hidden Valley.

Sophomores Camp Lacouture, Braydon Thornton and Beau Erickson have all been ruled out of the game, while junior Brady Libby will see limited action, coach Samuel Johnson announced Thursday night.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. at the Grants Pass school, matching the No. 16-seeded Vikings (6-3) and the top-ranked Mustangs (9-0).

Siuslaw junior quarterback Elijah Blankenship enters the game needing 39 yards to become the Vikings' all-time leader in passing yards for a season.

Blankenship connected on 19 of 30 passes last Friday against Sutherlin for 237 yards to become only the second Vikings quarterback to throw for more than 2,000 yards in a season.

Blankenship has 2,130 yards. Gabe Haberly had 2,168 yards in 2004 for the current record.

Thornton broke the Vikings' season record for receiving yards with 165 against Sutherlin. His total of 1,279 yards surpasses the previous record of 1,166 by Jared Kreil in 2004.

Lacouture finished the season with 917 yards. He missed the Sutherlin game after suffering a season-ending injury a week earlier against La Pine.

SUTHERLIN STATS

It's been a busy week for first-year coach Samuel Johnson, and totaling game statistics from last Friday's loss at Sutherlin took a back seat to other demands on his time.

He released some basic numbers Thursday night.

"I'm so behind the 8-ball this week," he said. "I've had a ton of stuff to do."

With Lacouture sidelined, Skyler Loomis stepped up to run for 77 yards, Hector Garcia 54, Blankenship 45 and Isaac Garza 27.

Garza also had 45 yards receiving, Avery Hart 23 and Rhys Fleming 4.

THEY MEET AGAIN

The Vikings and the Mustangs last met in the third game of the 2015 season, the last for legendary Vikings coach Tim Dodson.

Siuslaw won 34-13 at the Grants Pass school on the way to a 6-3 season that included a play-in game at Junction City.

Hidden Valley has gone 19-21 since that game, Siuslaw 12-27.

The two schools are among the four Class 4A schools currently playing down a classification. The two others are Madras (in the playoffs) and Corbett (which is not in the playoffs).

Hidden Valley has gone 15-4 in two years in 3A, and likely will return to the 4A Skyline League next fall. Siuslaw is 6-9 over two seasons of 3A play, and likely will remain in 3A for the next two seasons.

QUARTERBACK CLUB

The weekly meeting of the Vikings Quarterback Club will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the high school.
