Vikings take to the mats Friday at Harrisburg

The Siuslaw Vikings wrestling team opens its season tomorrow (Friday, Dec. 6) at the Deven Dawson Memorial Tournament in Harrisburg.

Action gets underway at noon.

Sixteen teams are entered, including Colton, Coquille, Creswell, Harrisburg, Jefferson, Kennedy, Monroe, Oakland, Pleasant Hill, Santiam Christian, Santiam, Scio, Sheldon, Sheridan, Siuslaw and Toledo.

There are 29 wrestlers on the Vikings roster, according to the OSAA.org website, including 11 freshmen and eight sophomores.

Three Vikings are ranked in the Oregon Wrestling Forum — junior Elijah LaCosse at No. 8 at 126, junior Ryan Jennings at No. 9 at 152 and senior Matthew Horrillo at No. 6 at 220.

Head coach is Neil Wartnik, assisted by Chris Rupp, Dusty Shingleton, Robert Forsythe, Rylan Burum, Stecher Buss and Thomas Jennings.

Siuslaw's first home match is 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, when they host North Bend and Reedsport in the Central Coast Challenge.
