Siuslaw captures Sutherlin Classic crown

The Siuslaw Vikings won the team title and had three individual champions Saturday at the Sutherlin Wrestling Classic in Sutherlin.

The Vikings totaled 154 points to 117 by runner-up Sutherlin and 110 by third-place Elmira in the 12-school event.

Cottage Grove was fourth with 101.5 points. Springfield had 93, Douglas 87, Oakland 81, South Umpqua 79, Glide 78, North Bend 72.5, Coquille 69 and Creswell 35.

Vikings winning titles included Mason Buss at 120 pounds, Hunter Petterson at 126 and Elijah LaCosse at 145.

Siuslaw's Bailey Overton (120) and Hayden Muller (135) won their four-person brackets in the accompanying girls tournament. Arrianna Brown finished second at 115.

Buss pinned Ethan Ingam of North Bend in the semifinals in 1 minute, 44 seconds and won by decision over Gage Dill of Glide, 6-3, in the first-place match.

Petterson pinned Kevin Garcia of North Bend in the semifinals in 3:25 and won by decision over Tony Florez of Coquille, 7-4, in the first-place match.

LaCosse won by major decision, 21-8, over Ethan Elmer of Coquille in the semifinals and won by decision over Ruben Fox of Elmira, 11-4, in the first-place match.

Yoskar Delamora was second at 106 and Ryan Jennings was second at 152.

Jason Garcia was fourth at 170, Christian Newlan fifth at 195, Matthew Horrillo fifth at 285, Louis Gentry sixth at 160 and Jonathan Rose sixth at 182.

Petterson scored 26 team points, Buss 24, LaCosse 23, Jennings 21, Yoskar Delamora 14, Jason Garcia 13, Christian Newlan and Matthew Horrillo 10, Jonathan Rose 6, JC Gentry 4 and Louis Gentry 3.

In boys junior varsity, Siuslaw's Michael Shick was first and Chance O'Brien second at 145-155.

Lucian Murphy (137-144) and Kyle Hughes (123-129) had third-place finishes.

Siuslaw is at Siletz on Thursday and hosts the Nick Lutz Invitational next Saturday.
