SIUSLAW COACH NEIL WARTNIK'S DISTRICT RECAP:

This weekend was very special!  We had so many outstanding performances.

Mason Buss had an impressive come from behind victory in the semifinals to defeat #2 seed Connor Ford from Sweet Home.  Ford took the lead early with a take down, but Mason drew closer with an escape in the second round.  Ford chose the neutral position in the 3rd round, and Mason took a 3-2 lead with a hard-fought take down.  Ford in frustration committed an unnecessary roughness penalty, giving Buss a two point cushion. Buss dominated Ford on top, squelching any attempt by his Sweet Home opponent to escape.  His 4-2 victory put him into the finals against State 4A top rated Evan Potter, from Junction City.  Potter overwhelmed Buss, pinning him in the first round.  Nonetheless, his second place performance was a great accomplishment.

Elijah LaCosse dominated #2 seed Evan Spencer from Sweet Home in the semifinals.  Spencer started the scoring with a takedown in the first round, and he was able to contain LaCosse the remainder of the round to
hold a 2-0 lead.  The turning point came in the second round LaCosse was able to dominate Spencer on top.  He turned Spencer for two near falls to take the lead.  He continued his domination of Spencer in the third round, notching a 7-2 victory.  This put LaCosse in the finals against #1 rated Jackson Royer also from Sweet Home.  Though Elijah's performance was better than his match against Royer two weeks prior, the Husky was still dominant and pinned Elijah in the first round.  Still, the coaching staff was very pleased with how LaCosse responded to his challenges.

Ryan Jennings wrestled spectacularly!  He gave #1 rated Noah Thompsom from Cascade his toughest match of the tournament in the semifinals (falling 16-5).  Though Thompson dominated Jennings, Ryan worked
relentlessly and actually scored the last points of the match.  He went on to defeat #2 seed Tanner Gibson from Junction City in the consolation semis (6-4) and crushed Jason Ritchie from Stayton 16-1 in the consolation finals.  He looked great all day Saturday against very good opponents.

Luiz (Pedro) Infante-Marquez also had a spectacular tournament.  Though unseeded, he placed 3rd, defeating #3 seed Tucker Weld on two separate occasions to become consolation champion.  His matches were hotly contested.  In the first meeting he successfully fought off his back to avoid being pinned.  He was dominant in the consolation semifinal, pinning Alexander Jacob of Junction City in the 3rd round.

Christian Newlan recorded a pair of gutty wins against Sweet Home opponents to become the 220 pound champion.  In his quarterfinal match he dominated and pinned Enoch Aparicio of Philomath in the first round.
In the semi-finals he spent more than 30 seconds in the first round fighting off a pin.  He came back in the second and third rounds to overwhelm his opponent (Kenny Storms of Sweet Home) 9-7.  In the finals he took a 2-0 lead in the second period by holding his opponent for a 2 point near fall.  In the third round Jake Fanning (of Sweet Home) recorded a 2 point reversal to tie the match.  Then, with 5 seconds left Newlan was awarded 1 point when Fanning committed a locked hands violation which gave Newlan his 3-2 victory.

Matthew Horrillo was dominant in winning the 285 pound championship, pinning Benjamin Law of Cascade near the end of the first round, notching a 5-2 decision over Colby Gazely of Sweet Home in the semifinals and recording a 3-0 decision over James Choi of Philomath in the finals. Matthew's last two matches were intense from start to finish.  He battled intensely from whistle to whistle to overcome his opponents.

Yoskar Delamora also wrestled a great tournament in the 106 pound bracket.  Unfortunately the #1, #2, #3 and #5 wrestlers in the state were in our region.  Yoskar, who was ranked #6 coming into the tournament, fought valiantly but was not quite able to secure a win in the semifinals or consolation semifinals.  In the consolation semfinals (against Blake Niemann from Philomath) he fought back from 7-0 deficit to knot the score at 7.  Unfortunately, he had Niemann in near fall criteria when Niemann suffered a nose bleed.  The match was stopped for blood time.  It the match had been able to continue, Yoskar would have taken the lead if he had been able to keep Niemann on his back.  Yoskar fought to put Niemann on his back in the waning seconds of the match, but Niemann countered Yoskar's pinning combination effectively and was able to reverse Yoskar to take a 9-7 lead.  He held on for the decision.  It was an emotional match.  Both wrestlers competed so well.

Hunter Petterson also had great moments in the tournament.  He placed 4th but lost the opportunity to wrestle at state when he was defeated by Trenton Smith of Sweet Home in a wrestle back.  A wrestle back
determines the final state representative of a district when the 4th and 5th place wrestlers have not met earlier in the tournament or when a 5th place finisher defeated a 4th place finisher earlier in the tournament.

Two other Vikings placed 6th--Spanish exchange student Jaime Morales-Mora in the 132 bracket and Louis Gentry in the 152 bracket.

This weekend Bailey Overton, Hayden Muller, Mason Buss, Elijah LaCosse, Ryan Jennings, Luiz Infante-Marquez, Christian Newlan, and Matthew Horrillo will represent the team at state.  This is the first time we have taken any girls to state, and this is the largest contingent of boys we have taken since we began the special district format which began in 2012.  The coaching staff cannot speak highly enough of how proud we are of this team.
