Vikings crash the Class 4A playoffs party

The season is not over for the Siuslaw Vikings boys basketball team.

"The Siuslaw boys varsity basketball team is still alive," athletic director Chris Johnson said via email, "and will play at Woodburn in the play-in round for a chance to advance to the state playoffs."

The Vikings will play at No. 6-ranked Woodburn (16-7) of the Oregon West Conference at 7 p.m. Friday.

Tuesday, the Vikings moved to No. 20 in the final Oregon School Activities Association Class 4A poll, supplanting Newport. Rankings were frozen at 10 p.m.

Other play-in pairings included Junction City at Hidden Valley, Phoenix at Sweet Home and North Valley at Stayton.

PLAY-IN PAIRINGS
No. 20 Siuslaw (11-14) at No. 6 Woodburn (17-7), 7 p.m. Friday (Coast Radio)
No. 16 Phoenix (13-10) at No. 12 Sweet Home (15-8), 6 p.m. Friday
No. 18 North Valley (14-9) at No. 11 Stayton (15-8), 3 p.m. Saturday
No. 15 Junction City (16-11) at No. 14 Hidden Valley (13-10), 7 p.m. Saturday

Twelve teams are automatic qualifiers, two from each league. The next eight in the rankings earn play-in berths, with the highest-ranking team hosting the lowest-ranking qualifier.

Siuslaw finished with an RPI rank of 22 and a Colley Rating of 21, while Newport was No. 20 in RPI and No. 23 in the Colley Rating.

Adding RPI and Colley, the two teams tied with a 43 total. Ties are broken by higher Colley Ratings, and Siuslaw was one slot ahead of No. 22 Madras and two ahead of Newport.

Newport finished its season Tuesday with a 60-50 loss to Sweet Home at Newport. It was the Cubs' third loss in a row.

The Cubs finished 8-16 overall and a sixth-place 3-9 in the Oregon West Conference.

Oddly enough, Newport opened its season with a 68-48 victory at Siuslaw.

Siuslaw will enter its play-in game as one of four Sky-Em League teams in the postseason.

No. 1-ranked Marist Catholic is an automatic qualifier as is Marshfield, which beat Junction City on Monday, 69-50, for the league's second automatic berth.

Marist Catholic and Marshfield advance into the 16-team championship bracket.

Junction City, which finished ranked No. 15, and Siuslaw advance as two of eight play-in teams.
