Rannow, Rendon-Padilla leave their marks

Siuslaw seniors Hannah Rannow, left, and Ryan Rendon-Padilla.

Siuslaw seniors Hannah Rannow and Ryan Rendon-Padilla already have etched their names in Vikings track and field lore as two-time state champions.

Small consolation, perhaps, now that the 2020 season has been canceled by the Oregon School Athletic Association.

"I'm heartsick for Hannah and Ryan," coach Chris Johnson said. "They are both all-timers. The fact that they don't get to add to their legacies makes me sad.

"Fortunately, they both have already committed to a school for next year."

Johnson says both are expected to compete, Rannow in cross country and track and field at Oregon State and Rendon-Padilla in track and field at Cornell.

Rannow will graduate as the school's record holder in the girls mile, No. 2 all-time in the 1,500 and 3,000 and No. 3 in the 800.

Her state titles were in the 3,000 meters in 2019 as a junior and in the 800 meters in 2018 as a sophomore.

Rendon-Padilla is the two-time defending 4A state champion in the IAAF javelin, with a school record and personal best of 191 feet, 7 inches set April 9, 2019.

The two were among 70 athletes on the 2020 roster — 51 boys and 19 girls.

Other top returnees included state placers Gracie Freudenthal, Brea Blankenship, Andrea Osbon and Ryan Jennings, all who will be seniors next spring.

Freudenthal won the girls' 4A 300 hurdles and finished fourth in the 100 hurdles in 2019.

Blankenship was fifth in the girls 800 and Osbon third in the girls shot put, while Jennings was fourth in the boys 300 hurdles.

"I'm sad for all of our kids who have dedicated themselves to be the best that they can be only to see it all evaporate," Johnson said.

"That being said, I know we are in a crisis, and people's health has to be at the forefront."

NOTES

No decision has been announced on how the current health crisis will impact either the annual Athlete of the Year Awards or the Siuslaw Hall of Fame induction banquet.

Says Johnson: "Can you have an Athlete of the Two-Thirds Year? It's an interesting question. I haven't talked with (co-sponsors) KCST or The Siuslaw News on this yet."

The Hall of Fame ceremonies are tied to the Siuslaw Athletic Booster Club's annual auction-dinner. The SABC has not held a meeting since February, and no announcement has been made on two August events.
