Some Vikings still may play ball this summer

Siuslaw Vikings baseball players still may have game this summer, at least at the American Legion level.

North Coos officials have a plan for a season starting June 17 with a doubleheader against South Coos at Clyde Allen Field in North Bend.

North Coos fills its roster with players from Florence, North Bend and Reedsport.

Vikings catcher Elijah Blankenship and infielder-pitcher Jared Northrop played last summer for North Coos, which has won the past two single-A state titles.

From John Gunther, sports editor of The World in Coos Bay:

"The season depends on a couple of elements," Gunther reported Monday. "First, the state needs to open up the possibility of baseball.

"Second, the Oregon School Activities Association needs to allow the use of school facilities, something that is currently not allowed.

"OSAA's executive board had an online meeting last week and emphasized that the use of school facilities would continue to be prohibited."

North Coos competes in Area 4 North with South Coos, Roseburg Pepsi and Grants Pass.

North Coos coach Brad Horning remains hopeful for the sake of the players.

"If baseball doesn't happen, I will just work on my house," Horning told Gunther. "But the kids only have so many seasons."
