Siuslaw HOF induction postponed to 2021

Siuslaw athletic director Chris Johnson

There will be no Siuslaw Hall of Fame Induction ceremony this year, Vikings athletic director Chris Johnson announced Friday by email.

"Due to concerns over COVID-19, the Siuslaw Athletic Booster Club has decided to postpone the 2020 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony scheduled for August 2020 until the summer of 2021," Johnson said.

"As soon as the date for 2021 is known we will get that out to individuals and teams in hopes that all inductees can be on hand for the 2021 ceremony."

The SABC's annual aucton-dinner still is up in the air, SABC president Steven Moser said by separate email.

"We are looking at postponing both the auction and hall of fame at this point," Moser said. "Possibly doing an online auction or something? We are meeting to discuss options moving forward with those events next week.

"And obviously without being able to do our traditional auction, our budget is going to be impacted as well. Who knows if we are even going to have organized athletics in the fall. We definitely are taking it
day-to-day. Crazy times for sure."

Three individuals and six state championship teams will be honored at the Siuslaw High School Hall of Fame induction ceremony Aug. 7 at the Florence Events Center.

The 10th class includes football player Robert Dimick (Class of 1975), golfer Jesse Schutte (2006) and basketball player Ben Voogd (2005).

Dimick was a (Portland) Oregonian first-team all-state running back in 1974, the year the Vikings went 10-2 and finished second in state. He also was a two-year starter at point guard on the basketball team and at second base on the baseball team.

Schutte won individual state golf titles in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Voogd is the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,853 points.

Schutte and Voogd were elected to the hall of fame last year, but requested their inductions be delayed due to scheduling conflicts.

Teams to be inducted include girls cross country (2004, 2005, 2006), boys cross country (2004), football (2006) and golf (2005).

Johnson said no decision has been made on honoring additional athletes in 2021.

"The committee will have to discuss options for next summer," he said, "and how we might (consider) the possibility of additional indictees.
