The Siuslaw Vikings soccer team went toe-to-toe Saturday with one of the top boys teams in Class 4A, lost, but came away with heads high.

Marist Catholic ran its record to 3-0 with a 4-0 victory at the Siuslaw field. The Vikings fell to 1-3.

"Our team played the game that I hoped they would play," Siuslaw coach Londi Tomaro said. "They passed and worked together and played effective defense. I'm proud of our efforts today.

"It is always good to play a team that is at a higher level because it makes you step up your game, and it gives you a visual of what you can aspire to be so every person on the team can see what we are working toward."

Tuesday the Vikings are at Cottage Grove for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff and Thursday at Marist Catholic in Eugene for a 7 p.m. start.

"I was happy with today's game for the most part," Tomaro said. "We knew Marist would be a very strong opponent and that we would have to work hard to even get chances in front of the net.

"We managed to get the ball into their end and in front of the goal several times in the first half and got off seven shots, including a nice one-touch off of a corner kick that the Marist keeper saved.

"In the second half we got the ball down in the attacking third a few times but were not able to get off any shots. We were exerting enough pressure throughout the game that the Marist defense was clearing the ball out instead of moving it back up the field.

"Marist played a strong passing game and moved the ball around very well. During portions of the game we were able to maintain pressure and mark the open passing targets to disrupt the flow of their momentum.

"However, during other portions of the game we were marking the ball instead of the players, which leads to unnecessary running and our players tiring more quickly."

Junior goalkeeper Kayden Lane had seven saves for Siuslaw, four in the first half when the Spartans had three goals and three in the second half.
