Lady Vikings topple Lady Pirates in 5 sets

Sophomore outside hitter Hailee Outlaw pounded down the final kill as the Siuslaw Vikings outlasted the visiting Marshfield Pirates in a Sky-Em League volleyball match Tuesday at Glenn Butler Court.

The Lady Vikings won 25-10, 22-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-10.

Siuslaw evened its league and season records at 3-3 with the win. The Lady Pirates slipped to 1-4 and 1-7.

The Lady Vikings are at Elmira on Thursday for their final road game of the regular season. The game is available online on the NFHS Network.

Siuslaw beat Elmira 3-0 earlier in the season, 25-21, 25-15, 25-10.

The Lady Vikings have two home matches next week, Junction City on Tuesday and Cottage Grove on Thursday.

Siuslaw bolted to leads of 5-1 and 10-5 in the decisive fifth set. Marshfield was never closer than three points thereafter, the last time 11-8.

Marshfield forced a fifth set by rallying from an 8-3 deficit in the fourth. The Lady Pirates tied it at 10-10 and never trailed after taking an 11-10 lead.

Siuslaw rallied from down 20-14 to win the third set, junior libero Hayden Muller's serving during a run of eight straight points for a 22-20 lead. Marshfield forged ties at 22-22 and 23-23, but senior outside hitter Kya Blake hammered a winner on set point.

Marshfield won the second set, scoring eight points in a row to move from a 5-5 tie to a 13-5 lead, then holding off a late charge by the Lady Vikings.

Siuslaw dominated the opening set, the Lady Pirates scoring only two points off their serve.

"Desi (Tupua) had the best match of the year so far with 17 kills and 2 blocks," Siuslaw coach Aslee Cole told Coast Radio. "Kya (Blake( had 10 kills and 1 block. Hailee Outlaw really showed up for us especially when we needed her she had 8 kills and 1 block."

Cedar Ward had 14 kills, 4 aces and 18 digs to lead Marshfield. Paige MacDuff had 14 kills and 4 aces. Gracie Peach had a team-high 22 assists.
