Vikings score more than brownie points

The Siuslaw Vikings proved poor hosts Thursday in the annual Run for the Brownies at the Florence Golf Links.

They pretty much hogged all the brownies, the race prize.

Both the Siuslaw boys and girls won team titles and Vikings junior Chad Hughes ran a sub-10-minute 3,000 meters for the individual title.

Bandon junior Holly Hutton, finishing 20th overall, had the top girls time of 11 minutes, 34.0 seconds.

The Siuslaw boys finished in the top four to score 16 points for the title. Bandon had 45 and North Bend 82. Reedsport did not have enough runners to score.

Hughes won in 9:50.0, followed by sophomore Samuel Ulrich in 10:03.1, senior Ryan Jennings in 10:04.0 and sophomore Kyle Hughes in 10:08.6.

Senior Jaxson Jensen was the fifth Viking to score, finishing sixth in 10:28.8.

The Siuslaw girls won the team title with 26 points, followed by Bandon with 45 and North Bend with 49. Reedsport did not have enough runners to score.

Siuslaw junior Rylee Colton was second among the ladies at 11:34.9, senior Gracie Freudenthal third in 11:57.8, senior Brea Blankenship fifth in 12:29.7, freshman Jane Lacouture seventh in 12:42.2 and freshman Corduroy Holbrook ninth in 12:48.0.

The Vikings compete next Thursday in the Sky-Em League championships at Marist Catholic in Eugene, with the goal of qualifying for the state meet April 10 in Tillamook.
